“The Soloist” Chosen for One Book Sacramento Community Read

Sacramento Public Library officials have announced The Soloist, which is The New York Times bestselling book and one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of the Year, as the title selected for the Sacramento Public Library’s fifth-annual One Book Sacramento: Connecting Our Communities. Written by Los Angeles Times columnist and novelist Steve Lopez, The Soloist is the true story of how Lopez becomes an unlikely advocate and friend to a mentally-ill, homeless man who was once a musical prodigy.Award-winning actors Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr. are set to star in a movie version of this compelling, emotionally charged tale of raw talent and renewed hope.  The film is scheduled for nation-wide release on April 24, 2009.

During the year, community members will be encouraged to read the book and attend library programs whose themes are based on the book.  Additional copies of the The Soloist have been ordered for Sacramento Public Library customers to begin reading now.One Book Sacramento will culminate this fall when Lopez will be the featured author at the Bee Book Club on Thursday, September 24, at the Central Library, in downtown Sacramento.

One Book Sacramento is the one book all adults in Sacramento County should be reading, because it is the one book everyone will be talking about,” said Gary Shaffer, library marketing director.
