A to Z Storage Solutions

a-to-z-storage-solutionsBy Donna Smallin
Storey Publishing, $10.95, 274 pages

The book could have been titled “You Have Too Much Stuff” for the phrase is repeated often, though using different words. It was simple reading and I wondered what these storage solutions would look like since there were no pictures to show how these shortcuts helped anyone, let alone the author.

There are some interesting bits of advice, like “If it’s broken, chuck it,” “Put your marriage certificate in a fire-proof box,” and “Store frequently used items where you use them.” This is my personal favorite: “Simplify your life by buying the same type of gift for bridal or baby showers and birthdays.” (Like diapers?) In short, 80% of the book reiterates what most folks view as ‘common sense’ and have the feel of being gleaned from the Internet and bundled into book form.

There are also a few sentences about storing hazardous chemicals and knives out of children’s reach which might help pregnant couples and new parents. Some tips made me laugh out loud, such as the quirky suggestion of asking the pizza establishment you frequent for pizza boxes in which to store quilts. “Mom! My blankets smell like pepperoni!”

The book is indeed helpful in its constant emphasis to get one’s house organized, even down to the wayward fabric remnants. Here and there are sprinkled quotes about organizing which I found a charming touch.

  1. Wellllll, I don’t know, Meredith… My quilts sure wouldn’t fit in pizza boxes! Ha!

Can’t imagine buying a book like this, but you’ve given us enough info to know whether it would be helpful…good job!

    Hi Meredith,

It sounds like this book was a little helpful and a little awful. It’s nice to have a frank review in the midst of some that are just a little too glowing. If someone selects this book it will be with the full knowledge of what it is, and isn’t. Keep up the good work!

    Dan
